A few days later, the horse came back and brought seven wild horses with it. That evening, all the neighbors said “That’s great.”

The farmer said, “we’ll see.”

A few days later, the conscription officers came around to draft young men for the army. They rejected his son because his leg was broken. And the neighbors said “Isn’t that wonderful?”

“The whole process of nature is an integrated process of immense complexity and it is really impossible to tell whether anything that happens in it is good or bad.

Many people have felt a shift in their life in the last couple of months, or feel the anticipation of a shift right now. If you follow planetary movements, you know that today Saturn moves from Sagittarius into Capricorn (in Vedic Astrology, Jyotish). That movement is symbolic for this shift.

It takes Saturn 2.5 to 3 years to move from one constellation (or sign) to the next. This is significant when you consider that it takes the moon only 2.25 days to transit a sign, and of course it takes the sun 30 days to do the same (after the sun transits twelve signs, it is a ‘solar return’ or a birthday).

Where this Saturn transit overlays with your birth chart determines how this shift affects you right now and what you can expect in that area of life over the next 3 years. ‘Areas of life’ include relationships, family, career, school, money, health, communication, home, parents, children, etc.

The key to any shift is to work with that energy, as it usually leads to a valuable lesson and benefit. Surrender control and get curious about where this may lead.

For more detail on this subject, I refer you to my friend, teacher, and world renown Master Astrologer James Kelleher. Click here.

Happy New Year! 2020 promises to be a year of growth, challenges, and victories. It’s good to remember a simple rule as you start making (or avoiding!) small and big decisions: Never, never, never make a decision from a place of FEAR.

When making a decision, allowing fear and doubt to influence it will result in a low vibration, compromise, and regret. Saying things like “I’m afraid to start (or end) this relationship because I may not find someone else” OR “I’m afraid to accept (or terminate) this job because I’m afraid of…” OR “I’m afraid of doing this thing (or not doing it) because…” is ALWAYS going to lead to the wrong decision. Fear stands for False Evidence Appearing Real and giving in to it will give you a small and unfulfilled life.

Instead, when facing a decision, ask “What is the right thing to do from a place of strength and integrity? What would the best version of me choose to do in this situation?”

It is ok to have fear and doubt sometime. Focusing on that, however, magnifies the uncertainty, the anxiety, the suffering. Acknowledge the fear, and have the courage to do the right thing regardless. This principle will allow you to enjoy an upward spiral in the quality of life. The alternative is leading what Henry David Thoreau called ‘a life of quiet desperation’.

In astrology a strong placement of the sun will give qualities like Leo, the constellation that is ruled by the sun. These qualities include confidence, leadership, loyalty, wanting to do something great in life, strong health and vitality, and an attraction to being the center of attention. A strong self of personal worth is indicated.

A poorly placed or aspected sun can give challenges with confidence and self-esteem and self-expression. There will be obstacles with career and the personality may be prone to boasting and have egotistical qualities. It can also signify challenges, difficulties, or separation from the father.

Knowing and understanding the underlying tendencies of planet placement can help you understand yourself and others with rare insight.

What is an emotion? When you say you feel ‘anxious’ or ‘peaceful’ or ‘fearful’ or ‘excited’, what is actually happening inside you? Take a moment right now, close your eyes and notice what you feel. Or, think of a situation in the past where you felt something, and determine what happened.

[fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][A few minutes later…] What did you find out? It’s not that simple to narrow down, right? This is because we have such strong meanings that we attach to the raw experience so that the raw experience is often identified with the meaning. In other words, feeling anxious could mean that there’s a pit in your stomach or a tightening in your chest. So anytime you feel a pit in your stomach, you feel ‘bad’.

In reality, when you are totally focused inward and in tune with what is actually happening, you will notice that a feeling is simply an energy running through your body at a certain frequency. When the energy moves a certain way, you immediately translate it to be a certain feeling. However, the ‘feeling’ or ‘translation’ of the energy does not equal the energy itself.

A radio works in a similar way. When an energy runs through it, and is tuned to a certain frequency, pop music plays. When it is tuned to another frequency, classical music plays. The radio is the ‘body’ that feels the energy and the station is the ‘meaning’ of that energy. Pop or classical is not ‘negative’ or ‘positive’, it is just different.

Next time you feel something, take a moment, close your eyes, and tune in to the raw experience and create separation from the attached interpretation of ‘happy’ or ‘sad’. Simply observe the sensation. The more you do this, the more separation you will feel from the entrapment of your feelings, and you will experience more freedom.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

It is interesting to go through life ‘thinking’ every minute of the day without paying attention to what is actually happening when you have a thought. In practices of dis-attachment one often hears the advice ‘observe your thoughts; thoughts are like clouds in the sky, you can’t grab them, just watch them go by.’ What does that actually mean?

When I say the word ‘mother’ to you, in reality there are only five possibilities that can happen. You SEE A PICTURE of your mother, you SEE A VIDEO of your mother, you SEE THE WORD ‘mother’, you HEAR THE WORD ‘mother’, or you have an abstract THOUGHT BALL of the concept of mother.

Regardless of the meaning (positive or negative) that you associate with ‘mother’, the mechanics of what happens is one of the five things described above. ‘Becoming awake’ has a lot to do with differentiating between what is actually happening and the meaning you attribute to what is happening.

For the next 24 hours, pay attention to what is really happening in your Inner Space, the space you ‘see’ when your eyes are closed. For most people what is actually happening is hearing a voice or seeing a picture, though the other three options are also possible. Notice the shift in your perspective as your awareness increases.

If you are new to yoga and looking to try it out, there are many choices. It’s important to understand that having ‘success’ with yoga means having the patience to find the right fit for you, because there is no such thing as ‘yoga is not for me’. There are many different styles of yoga and many teachers within each style. For every age, body type, and skill level there are classes out there. Discovering the right class with the right teacher for you is worth the effort. After all, few things can give you in just one hour the many benefits of yoga (depending on the style): aerobic exercise, anaerobic exercise, stress reduction, strength, flexibility, spirituality, and connection to a loving community. Flexibility has also been shown to increase blood flow to the brain and help in the aging process.

The first step is to commit to research, meaning to try out a couple of classes per week for a couple of months until you’ve found what makes you feel best. Try out more than one studio to determine which vibe you like better. If you’re fit or looking for a ‘workout’, Power, Vinyasa and Ashtanga classes are a good place to start because of the yoga pushups (Chatturanga) and the faster movement. Traditional classes are often referred to as Hatha – they are slower and tend to be more mindful. If you want to relax, Restorative yoga is wonderful and less intense than Yin yoga. In both of these you do fewer postures with longer holds. There are also ‘specialty’ options like Kundalini yoga, Yoga Nidra (a lying down guided meditation), Adaptive yoga, Chair yoga and more.

Look for ‘level 1’ or ‘all levels flow’ and make sure to tell the teacher that you’re new to yoga and if you have any injuries.

Once you’ve found the type of yoga that your body likes, try different instructors within that style to get the experience that fulfills you. Each teacher brings their own personality and atmosphere to the class. Most yoga studios have an intro special of some kind (free week or 30 days for $40) and you can also find deals on Groupon.

Two of my favorite teachers in Denver are Beth Sanchez and Jeremy Wolf. They are both knowledgeable, experienced, kind, and live what they teach. Currently my favorite studio is Sol 19 Yoga in Longmont where I teach a weekly class.

The ability of the moon to affect the ocean’s tide is an indication of the power held by this luminary of the sky. Thus is should not be a surprise that the moon can also have an effect on us humans since we are made up of 70+ % water. In ancient times the moon was assigned the archetype that represents the mother, and it was given the qualities relating to emotions, nurturing, compassion, and a sense of security.

A new moon is dark and represents a potential perception of lack of emotional support. If you are sensitive to the lunar cycle, you may feel more edgy or less loved when this happens. A full moon, on the other hand, represents a fullness of emotion like a cup overflowing. It can cause emotions to be exaggerated. If you speak to school teachers, prison guards, or hospital workers they will tell you that they have more incidents on full moon days/nights than any other day of the month.

In general, new moons are good for reflection, organization, and meditation. Full moons are good for new beginnings and finding a constructive way to utilize the extra energy.

Modern lifestyle has caused us to be more separated from nature and less in touch with natural rhythms. It is worth exploring whether the moon cycles have an observable effect on you. Mark your calendar for the next 3 months to identify new moon and full moon days and notice how you feel and behave on those days. If there is a significant impact on your mood, this knowledge could help you organize your life around the lunar cycle, e.g. not scheduling important meetings on new moons and not indulging with your diet on full moons so that you honor your biorhythms.
